How to Cook the Perfect Steak
Ever wonder why your steaks don’t turn out as well as the ones at you get in a high class restaurant? Ever wonder what their secret was?
We know how you feel. Yes, we had the ability to cook a pretty good steak but it just never seemed to live up to the level of a top restaurant. One little secret is that a LOT of these steaks are actually cooked in the oven.
That’s right the perfect steak cooked in the oven. I know you think we are crazy but we aren’t.
In fact, we watched Chef Gordon Ramsey who Is not only a top chef but also a top restaurant owner, cook a steak in a very similar fashion.
Hey, if it is good enough for Chef Gordon Ramsey, it is good enough for us. We are not going to give you the recipe he used, he might not like that and we don’t want him yelling at us.
We will give you a method similar to the one we saw Gordon Ramsey use to make the perfect steak.
Now, if you want a great steak cooked to perfection you need to start with a piece of meat. You need the right ingredients if you want to cook a steak that is great.
We really like a high quality Fillet Mignon. This is a GREAT piece of meat for cooking the perfectly cooked steak. Let’s face it the Fillet Mignon is a prime piece of beef cut from the smaller end of the tenderloin.
We admit, because they are somewhat thick if you like a well done steak these might not be the perfect choice for you. We have found that overcooking a fillet mignon makes it pretty tough. The center might still be edible but the outsides will be like leather.
What type of equipment do you need?
- Stove top
- Oven
- Cast Iron Skillet
Ingredients needed?
- Great piece of beef. Fillet Mignon is our choice
- Olive Oil
- Butter
- Salt
- Pepper
To us this is all you need to cook the perfect steak in the oven.
Take your streak out of the refrigerator and let it sit for about 20 minutes or so while you get ready to cook it. Never FREEZE it!
Go ahead and get your oven started preheating to 400 degrees.
Put your Cast Iron Skillet on the stove and get it started heading up.
While you are waiting salt and pepper both sides of your steak. Let that sit for a few minutes. Letting it sit with the salt and pepper on it for the entire 20 minutes you are letting sit out of the refrigerator is perfect.
Once your cast iron skillet is hot on the stove top put your butter and olive oil in. Not too much. Then sear both sides of the steak. Don’t overcook on the stove top. We just want to SEAR both sides.
Once both sides are seared, put the cast iron skillet (with the steak) in the pre-heated oven.
For a medium steak you need to leave it in the oven for about 10 minutes.
Once you take it oven remove it from the pan and let the steak rest for 5 to 10 minutes. Remember it will still cook a little while it is resting.
If you have juice from the steak, butter and olive oil still in the pan it makes a great sauce for your perfectly cooked steak.
